Will my customers hang up on an AI receptionist?

David He, FounderUpdated 3 min read
The short answer

Some will, mostly when the AI pretends to be a person, talks over them, or gives them no way to reach a human. Fewer hang up when it says it is an AI assistant up front, answers fast, handles the common request in under a minute, and offers a person or a quick callback. The safest start is to send only after-hours and overflow calls to it.

Compare it to voicemail, not to you

Owners picture the AI replacing them answering the phone. On most missed calls, the real alternative is voicemail, and voicemail does badly. In Invoca's call data, fewer than 3% of callers sent to a home-service voicemail leave a message. In CallRail's 2025 survey, 82% of consumers said they would call a competitor if a business did not answer.

So the question is not "is the AI as good as me?" It is "does the AI keep more callers than my voicemail does?" For most shops it does, if it is set up well.

Why people hang up

People are blunt about this online. Threads like this one on r/sales are full of callers who hang up the moment they hear a bot. The reasons repeat:

  • It pretends to be human. Callers feel tricked when they figure it out, and they always figure it out.
  • It is slow or talks over them. Long pauses, or cutting in when someone says "uh huh", break trust fast. Older callers get it worst.
  • It cannot get them to a person. Someone with water on the floor wants a human, and a bot that loops makes it worse.
  • It asks too much. Spelling an email address out loud on a phone call is where many calls die.

Gartner reported in 2026 that 87% of customers say access to a human is essential when a business uses AI for service. That is the design rule.

How to set it up so fewer callers hang up

  1. Say what it is in the first sentence. "Thanks for calling Smith Plumbing, this is the after-hours assistant." Plain, not cute.
  2. Get to the point. Name, address, what is wrong, how urgent. Four things, then done.
  3. Always offer a person. "If you'd rather talk to someone, I can have the on-call tech call you back." Then make sure someone does.
  4. Text, do not spell. Collect details by text after the call instead of asking people to spell things out loud.
  5. Send a summary to you right away, so the callback is fast and you do not ask the customer to repeat everything.

Start small

Do not switch your main line over on day one. Send after-hours calls first, then overflow calls when your phone is busy. Leave your normal answering in place during the day. You learn how your own customers react without risking your best calls.

How to tell if it is working

  • Count calls that end in the first 10 seconds. That is your hang-up rate.
  • Count how many calls end with a booked job or a callback request.
  • Listen to 20 recordings in the first two weeks and fix the script where people get stuck.

NexAI's front desk follows these rules: it identifies itself, hands off to a person when it is unsure, and texts you a summary of every call. Tier 1, the Speed-to-Lead Front Desk, is $497/month with $0 setup. Tier 2, the Complete AI Front Desk + Custom Site, is $997/month with $1,500 setup and adds the live AI voice receptionist.

More questions home-service contractors ask

Should an AI receptionist say it is an AI?

Yes. Callers who discover it later feel tricked. A short, plain line in the greeting works best.

Do older customers hate AI receptionists?

Older callers struggle most with an AI that pauses too long or talks over them. A fast, short script with an easy way to reach a person matters more for them than the voice itself.

Can I use an AI receptionist only after hours?

Yes, and it is the safest way to start. Forward calls to it after hours and when your line is busy, and keep answering yourself during the day.

What happens if the AI does not know the answer?

A well-set AI receptionist should take the caller's details, tell them a person will call back, and alert you right away instead of guessing.
