By Hand or By AI Isthe Wrong Question

A designer with twenty years of agency work gave up on AI a year ago because everything it handed back looked like a template. He was right about the output and wrong about the conclusion, and the difference is worth about a day of work a week.

Why he quit

A designer I had coffee with this morning tried AI on his own portfolio site a year ago. Everything it handed back looked like a template. He has twenty years behind him. He can tell.

So he filed it under wireframing tool and went back to doing the design by hand.

I asked him what he actually loves about the work, and he did not hesitate. Brand work, web design, building the front end. All of it.

At agencies he only ever got one slice, design it and hand it to a developer. Going independent was his way of owning the whole thing, from the first sketch to the live site.

He got it from his mother, a folk artist who made her living refinishing old furniture by hand and painting it. That is where by hand comes from.

It is not a stance against tools. It is the part of the job he would do for free.

The tell

Then I asked which of the current models he had tried. He said flatly that he had not heard of most of them and was not well versed.

I respect that more than the alternative.

He also told me he was done with WordPress and wanted to rebuild his own site on Astro with Sanity as the CMS - faster, and harder for clients to break. He was going to spend the week figuring out how.

What twenty minutes looks like now

I have never built one of those either.

So I asked if I could show him my workflow, opened voice mode on my agent, and just talked to it. What do I need, how do the two fit together, where do I deploy.

It answered like a colleague: the big choice is whether your pages are built ahead of time or rendered on demand when someone visits.

While it was explaining, it was also building.

We were nearly out of time, so I told it to hurry up and give me something I could show. It said it had asked the build to prioritize a viewable homepage first. A minute later there was a clean landing page on my screen, three article pages, build passing.

The only thing it could not do was create the Sanity account for me.

At home the rest took under twenty minutes. Not long ago that was a full day, maybe the weekend.

The claim I would defend

He said that's incredible, and that he would go explore it. Smart.

The best work is no longer done by hand or by AI. It is done by the two together, and a professional with twenty years of depth who will not learn the tools loses to someone with five years and more fluency.

I am not sure how to prove it.

I do know the client never asks how long it took. They ask whether it is good, and whether someone with taste made the calls.
